Get to Know – Sarah & Troy (Auswide Explorers)

Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to become a full-time traveller?

I worked for an organisation for 11 years and just felt like a number. Covid hit and put everything in perspective for us so we decided life was to short to be unhappy. So we decided to put the house up for sale and see what happened. It sold in the first open home and within 3 months we bought a caravan and left on our 12 month adventure. We soon discovered we wanted this to be our life and we knew if we wanted to keep going we needed to find work.

How do you balance work and travel on the road? Any productivity tips for those considering a similar lifestyle?

We have done a few stints in different caravan parks all around Australia and the longest we have worked is 4 months and the shortest about 6 weeks. We travel for a couple of months and then we find work in places that have a lot to do so we can explore on our days off. It is hard travelling around all the time so we actually enjoy stopping and slowing down for a while.

What type of work do you do while travelling, and how did you transition to a remote or mobile career?

We both work in caravan parks, I do reception and Troy is grounds and maintenance. Troy was a Carpenter so he transitioned very easily. I worked in admin most of my life so all I needed to learn was the booking systems.

Can you highlight some of your favourite destinations and memorable experiences from your travels?

Our favourite places would definitely be Esperance and Exmouth WA. Living and working in both locations was just magic because we could really stop and explore and not have to rush around.

Have you faced any challenges working on the road, and how did you overcome them?

Yes Troy had a major car accident and our car was written off in Exmouth so that was difficult being in such a remote area. Troy eventually had to fly to Perth to pick up another car but we ended up driving back to Brisbane due to the lack of medical facilities. This completely changes our plans but worked out for the better as we got to go home and surprise our family for Christmas.

What essential items or tools do you carry with you to make working while travelling more efficient?

I have a laptop and a small printer and Troy has some basic tools.

Are there specific destinations that have been particularly conducive to your work and offered a unique working environment?

We have worked all over Australia from Darwin to Esperance, Exmouth, Atherton and Kilcoy in Queensland.

How do you stay connected with your community and maintain a support system while constantly on the move?

We are in constant contact with out family through video calls and they love watching our adventures on our Instagram through stories and posts.

What advice do you have for individuals who are considering a full-time travelling lifestyle but are hesitant to take the plunge?

It is a really scary thought to leave everything you know but once you make the decision and make it happen you will never look back. There is heaps of work around, you just need to be willing to try anything to keep the dream alive.

Can you share a funny or unexpected anecdote from your travels that stands out in your memory

Always check the toilet cassette is in before going to the toilet.
